How it all began

The view that inspired us to create Another Island

Back in the 1850’s, when the region of Agios Georgios was being mined for ferrous metals, the company that operated the mines constructed a few huts up the hill to use as accommodation for their workers - as close as possible to the mining pits (some of which can still be seen when hiking around the area). After the mining operations stopped, these huts were left unattended.

Many years later, in the 1980’s George, a person of little means but with great vision and no fear of hard work, purchased these derelict huts (allegedly that was all he could afford after selling a used Volvo 244) and began to restore them; over the course of the next three decades, he added a windmill and one more large building, that he wanted to one day turn into a restaurant (but mainly used to store whatever interesting piece of furniture and object he could get his hands on).

In 2016, his son, Marios, decided to partner with Philip, a high school friend, to breathe new life to a location that was stunning, yet needing a lot of love to reveal their true potential. This was the birth of Another Island.

The two friends became business partners and were joined by Nansy, a very talented designer whose love for Agios Georgios and for simple, functional yet refined aesthetics came alive inside and outside the walls of these five homes.

Since 2017, Another Island has been welcoming guests - many of whom have returned again and again, having felt the very special energy of this place and developed their own special connection to it. We could not be happier that they are part of our journey - and that we are part of theirs.
